The Alfred and Agnes Memorial Centre for Children is situated in Brewerville, Liberia. The centre provides accommodation, education and a clinic for the resident children and local community.
The Centre needs urgent financial assistance to get them through the next few months due to the outbreak of Ebola in the West African country. Roadblocks are everywhere; the country is on lock down in an attempt to minimise the spread of the virus. The Centre’s farm cannot be accessed and the cost of food is rising due to the difficulties with transport..
Money donated will be wired directly to the Centre and used to purchase staples such as rice.
The Centre has strong connections with Wexford; Fr Pat Mernagh was stationed nearby with the Irish UN Peacekeeping forces. He introduced Wexford Aid Worker Padraig Grant to the administrators and a link with Wexford was formed.
Donations from Wexford enabled the Centre’s administrators to become self sufficient with a clinic, school, improved living accommodation and a farm. The farm is used to provide a variable diet for the children and adults at the Centre and also to create an income; crops are sold to the local community and profits re-invested. Located 4 hours away near the border with Guinea the farm is vital to the centre as a source of food and income from the re-sale of crops.
Over the years, Padraig has maintained the friendship with the Centre and it’s administrators, brothers Adonis and Jerome Pedersen and their sister, Evita; it was they who alerted Padraig to the impending crisis.
