Christmas and the Lions Club, to many people, go hand in hand. This is the time of year when Lions across the country ramp up their fundraising activities and fulfil the Lions motto ‘We Serve’. Families facing economic hardship are presented with Christmas Hampers or shopping vouchers, children receive gifts, hospital visits are made and the elderly visited and entertained. None of this is possible without the assistance of the local community who have supported the Lions since their introduction to Ireland in 1955.
This Christmas, Wexford Lions Club will have their usual fundraising activities, a street collection, the Tombola in Dunnes Stores, Christmas Cards and the much loved ‘Elf Socks’. This year, a new fundraiser will take place on December 5th. Local man, Nigel Conway, will be staging a ‘sleep out’ on Saturday night, December 5th to raise funds for and awareness of homelessness in our local community.
Nigel is no stranger to voluntary work and fundraising having spent time working on charitable projects in the slightly warmer climates of Ethiopia and the Philippines. Wexford’s Bullring on a cold December night will add a new element to his endeavours. ‘My mam, Hilda, is in the Lions Club in Wexford and I wanted to do something to highlight the work the organisation does in the town and hopefully, raise a bit of money along the way’ the secondary school teacher says. Teaching in Dublin, Nigel oversees the St Vincent de Paul at his school and has led his students in numerous charitable activities. ‘I am hoping a few of my Wexford friends will join me on the night; Mark Mahoney and Conor Ryan, who’s mam is also a Lions Club member, have agreed to pitch in and we are working on a few others!’.
Nigel, Conor and Mark will be in Wexford’s Bullring on Saturday night, December 5th along with members of the Lions Club and hope that passing revellers might spare a thought, and a few euro, for them in their endeavours. As with all Lions Club projects, 100% of money donated will be utilised on projects; no administration costs are taken from donations as members self fund this aspect of the organisation.
