Twenty two Carers were welcomed to Ballyvaloo Retreat and Conference Centre on Friday 2nd October by Wexford Mayor Ger Carthy and by Wexford Lions Club President, Willie Roche. Lions Clubs from around the country sponsored Carers from their local community to escape their roles for a weekend, with guests coming from the towns of Sligo, Gort, Bray, Killiney , Howth-Sutton, the Sugarloaf Club in Wicklow, Monaghan and Wexford.
The weekend began with a welcome from the Mayor and dinner at the seaside retreat centre, followed by a night of singing, story telling and entertainment. On Saturday the guests attended a workshop with Brona Cloonan who spoke about self help to empower the Carers to enhance the quality of their lives. Saturday also saw the guests take part in a range of relaxation activities including Reflexology, Individual Counselling, Computer Skills and a talk on fashion and styling. Guests were also treated to a pampering session with beauticians and were delighted with their manicures and make-overs. Marion Mahon from the Carers Association was also in attendance with advice relating to benefits and entitlements. The group rounded up their activities on Saturday with a fantastic meal and entertainment in Wexford Golf Club.
The weekend concluded on Sunday morning with a special blessing for the Carers and they left Ballyvaloo with lasting memories of their weekend in Wexford. This is the second year that Wexford Lions Club have hosted the Carer’s weekend; it is a long standing, well run project of Sligo Lions Club and is well attended thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Sligo Lions. As carers to family members, most of the guests rarely get a day off, much less a weekend away; the Caring for Carer’s Weekend has been noted as being a life line to many who have attended.
The Lions Caring for Carer’s weekends benefits carers from all over the country, lifting their spirits and letting them know that they are not alone in their role. The guests left Wexford on Sunday, feeling refreshed and empowered, having enjoyed excellent company, entertainment and blue skies.
